Living by the Spirit [Galatians 5:1-6 NLT]

1 So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don't get tied up again in slavery to the law. 2 Listen! I, Paul, tell you this: If you are counting on circumcision to make you right with God, then Christ will be of no benefit to you. 3 I'll say it again. If you are trying to find favor with God by being circumcised, you must obey every regulation in the whole law of Moses. 4 For if you are trying to make yourselves right with God by keeping the law, you have been cut off from Christ! You have fallen away from God's grace. 5 But we who live by the Spirit eagerly wait to receive by faith the righteousness God has promised to us. 6 For when we place our faith in Christ Jesus, there is no benefit in being circumcised or being uncircumcised. What is important is faith expressing itself in love.

OBSERVATION QUESTIONS
1) What does the Apostle Paul tell God's children about themselves and warn them against? (v.1)
2) What does Paul tell legalists that they must do if they insist on keeping the law to become righteous? Why? (v.2-4)
3) What do those who live by the leading of the Holy Spirit wait for? Why? (v.5-6)

4) Do you know of anyone who insists on earning their righteousness through "works of the flesh" (self-effort or legalism)? If so, what if anything are you doing to help them?

LIFE LESSONS
5) The Holy Spirit, working in and through the Word of God and other believers, is the only one who can enlighten those who insist on keeping "rules" to earn their righteousness.  

Children of God (Galatians 3:26-29)

26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if ye [be] Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

1) What makes us children of God? (v.26)
2) What have those who have been baptized into Christ done? (v.27)
3) Who is one in Christ Jesus, Abraham's seed, and heirs of God's promise? (v.28-29)

APPLICATION QUESTIONS
4) Are you a child of God? If so, how do you know? If not, what will you do to become God's child?

LIFE LESSONS
5) All who have faith in Jesus Christ belong to Him and are children of God.

The Law and the Way of Faith (Galatians 3:21-25 NLT)

21 Is there a conflict, then, between God's law and God's promises? Absolutely not! If the law could give us new life, we could be made right with God by obeying it. 22 But the Scriptures declare that we are all prisoners of sin, so we receive God's promise of freedom only by believing in Jesus Christ. 23 Before the way of faith in Christ was available to us, we were placed under guard by the law. We were kept in protective custody, so to speak, until the way of faith was revealed. 24 Let me put it another way. The law was our guardian until Christ came; it protected us until we could be made right with God through faith. 25 And now that the way of faith has come, we no longer need the law as our guardian.

1) How are we made right with God? By obeying God's commands or by faith in Jesus Christ? (v.21-22)
2) Why was the law given? (v.23-24)
3) When do we no longer need the Law as our guardian? (v.25)

4) Are you still attempting to be made right with God by obeying His commands in your own minuscule strength? If so, why?

5) The only way to be in right relationship with God is through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Way of Faith (Galatians 3:10-14 NLT)

10 But those who depend on the law to make them right with God are under his curse, for the Scriptures say, "Cursed is everyone who does not observe and obey all the commands that are written in God's Book of the Law." 11 So it is clear that no one can be made right with God by trying to keep the law. For the Scriptures say, "It is through faith that a righteous person has life." 12 This way of faith is very different from the way of law, which says, "It is through obeying the law that a person has life." 13 But Christ has rescued us from the curse pronounced by the law. When he was hung on the cross, he took upon himself the curse for our wrongdoing. For it is written in the Scriptures, "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree." 14 Through Christ Jesus, God has blessed the Gentiles with the same blessing he promised to Abraham, so that we who are believers might receive the promised Holy Spirit through faith.

2) If the Law does not make us right with God, what does? (v.11)
3) How does the "way of Faith" differ from the "way of the Law"? (v.12-13)
4) How and why do we receive the blessing promised to Abraham? (v.14)

7) Faith in Jesus Christ is what puts believers in right relationship with God.
8) Obedience to the law can never justify a child of God.

Another Gospel (Galatians 3:1-9 KJV)

1 O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you? 2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? 3 Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh? 4 Have ye suffered so many things in vain? if [it be] yet in vain. 5 He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, [doeth he it] by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? 6 Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. 7 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham. 8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, [saying], In thee shall all nations be blessed. 9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.
